My first area of workshops fall into intersectional anti-oppression training; and my second area covers how to empower learners to have difficult conversations and move their culture from controversy and political division to cultures of authentic pluralism and belonging.
Whether it is teaching a Queer 101 or a recovering from a past EDI trainer who left more division than dialogue, these pillars guide my teaching (and our time together!):
↳ People Before Pronouns (but let’s talk about both): Through narratives that spotlight the lived experiences of marginalized people, we’ll humanize these complex issues and bring people back to the centre of this conversation. When we precede equity with empathy for others, we are more easily able to stretch our norms and practices for them.
↳ Powered by Data, Delivered with Heart: Evidence guides my key takeaways — and it allows me to approach experimentation with a strong footing in best practices. A doctoral-trained researcher myself, I have published, presented, and learned from experts across the world in best practices in equity education. While I am grounded in research, I’m rooted in relationships: I help translate the research from theory to action.
↳ Practice Makes People (Not Perfect): All of my workshops and speaking engagements carve out time for people to participate and learn how to fumble together so that when I leave, you can still handle brave conversations. Introverts — be not afraid: Participation looks different for every learner, so whether it is texting in your answers or answering reflection questions with a parter, we will make sure you have get time to practice and get it wrong (which means we’re learning!).
